Spain’s World Cup-Winning Star Ferran Torres Has Guwahati Connection

GUWAHATI-Spain’s FIFA World Cup-winning forward Ferran Torres, whose decisive goal against Argentina secured his country’s triumph in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, has a little-known connection with Assam.

Torres showcased his talent at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Sarusajai, Guwahati, during the FIFA U-17 World Cup hosted by India in 2017, long before emerging as Spain’s World Cup hero.

The Spanish forward was part of the Spain team that faced France in a Group D match at the Guwahati venue on October 17, 2017.

Spain defeated France 2-1 in a closely contested encounter, with Torres among the standout young players who impressed thousands of football fans at the stadium.

Nearly a decade later, the teenager who played in Guwahati scored the goal that handed Spain the FIFA World Cup title against Argentina, capping an outstanding tournament with the defining moment of his international career.

Torres’ World Cup-winning goal has also revived memories of the 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Assam, an event widely regarded as a landmark moment for football in the state.

As one of the tournament’s host cities, Guwahati gave local fans a rare opportunity to watch several future international stars before they became household names.

Torres’ World Cup triumph has given football fans in Assam another reason to cherish the memory of seeing the Spanish forward play in Guwahati years before he became a World Cup hero. (IANS)
