ASHBURN, VA – Senator Suhas Subramanyam, Obama White House alumnus and candidate for Virginia’s 10th Congressional District, authored and shepherded through the state senate, SB 273, which would establish a 5-day firearm purchase waiting period for any gun purchased in the Commonwealth of Virginia, intended to disrupt impulsive self-harm, or acts of violence.

Subramanyam’s bill passed the Senate by a vote of 21-19 a day after activist David Hogg visited the Virginia legislature to promote gun violence prevention.

Firearm purchase waiting periods are opposed by the National Rifle Association.

Subramanyam also pushed through four more bills that enhance gun safety including ones that prohibit automatic weapons from being carried in public (passed 21-19), prohibits manufacturing concealable firearms (passed 21-19), prohibit sale of devices to make weapons automatic (passed 28-12) and institutes mandatory firearms training (passed 21-19)

Subramanyam said he is “committed to breaking the stronghold the NRA and gun manufacturers have had over elected officials, instead siding with most Virginians who want sensible gun control reforms that protect our communities.”

He added, “I don’t want my two girls to live in a future where they feel safe in their schools instead of needing armed security, active shooter drills, and bulletproof windows.”
