Texas Flood Death Toll Tops 104 As Search Continues For Missing
HOUSTON, TX (IANS)- The death toll from flash floods that struck Texas in the US has now tragically climbed to over 100 people, with an unknown number still missing, officials confirmed.
Search and rescue teams are diligently working through mud-piled riverbanks, though hope of finding more survivors is fading, four days after the catastrophe. The region remains under threat of more rain and thunderstorms, the BBC reported.
Camp Mystic, a Christian all-girls’ summer camp, has confirmed that at least 27 girls and staff are among the deceased. Ten girls and one camp counselor are still unaccounted for.
Meanwhile, the White House has refuted suggestions that budget cuts at the National Weather Service (NWS) could have hampered the disaster response.
In Kerr County alone, at least 84 victims – comprising 56 adults and 28 children – died when the Guadalupe River swelled due to torrential downpours before daybreak on, July 4. The county sheriff’s office stated that some 22 adults and 10 children have yet to be identified.
In its latest forecast, the NWS has predicted additional slow-moving thunderstorms, potentially leading to more flash flooding in the area.
