Thanedar Warns Against Trump, Highlights Risks To India-US Ties
DETROIT, MI (ANI) – U.S. Congressman Shri Thanedar raised concerns over the potential return of Donald Trump to the presidency, warning that the former president’s refusal to accept the 2020 election results and controversial policies could damage both American democracy and India-U.S. relations. Speaking on the importance of the Indian American vote in the upcoming presidential election, Thanedar emphasized the growing support for Vice President Kamala Harris in the critical swing state of Michigan.
“Trump won Michigan in 2016, so it’s very close,” Thanedar said, “but we are starting to see momentum, especially among women, young people, people of color, and African Americans, who are moving toward Kamala Harris. Trump has insulted many of these groups, which is causing some migration.”
Addressing the Indian American community’s voting patterns, Thanedar highlighted its diversity, noting that while Indian Americans often lean Democratic, they hold a range of views on social, economic, and immigration issues. He contrasted the candidates’ values, stating, “Kamala Harris is pro-democracy, pro-women’s rights, while Donald Trump has a history of hateful remarks against immigrants and favors large corporations over the public.”
Thanedar also criticized Trump for his conduct following the 2020 election, which culminated in the January 6 Capitol riots. “Trump didn’t accept his loss; he encouraged hostility towards Congress members. Trump wants to be a dictator, with no respect for democracy,” Thanedar asserted, expressing concerns about potential violence if Trump were to challenge a democratic outcome in 2024.
On foreign policy, Thanedar warned that a Trump presidency could strain U.S.-India relations, particularly due to Trump’s stance on tariffs. “If Trump becomes president, he’ll likely enforce tariffs on countries like India and China, raising consumer prices. It’s estimated that each person may pay up to $4,000 more,” he stated. “Trump’s policies would not be good for U.S.-India relations.”
Thanedar’s remarks underscore his belief in the importance of a pro-democracy, inclusive leadership for the United States and the potential impact of the Indian American vote in the 2024 election.
