Treesa-Gayatri Climb In World Ranking After Winning Bronze

NEW DELHI- Indian women’s doubles stars Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand have climbed 12 places to World No. 27 in the latest BWF rankings after winning a historic bronze medal at the recently concluded World Championships in New Delhi.

The pair, who were ranked No. 39 last week with 33,692 points, now have 44,192 points following their memorable run at the Worlds.

Treesa and Gayatri won the only medal for India at the Championships, becoming the first Indian women’s doubles pair to win a World Championships medal since Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa claimed bronze in 2011.

On their way to the historic medal, Treesa and Gayatri stunned fourth-seeded Chinese pair Jia Yi Fan and Zhang Shu Xian in the quarterfinals. After losing the opening game, the Indians produced a brilliant comeback to win 16-21, 21-15, 21-13.

In the semifinals, they faced World No. 1 and defending champions Liu Sheng Shu and Tan Ning. (IANS)
