DENTON, TEXAS – Anurup Reddy Koduru, a 22-year-old native of Hyderabad and a graduate of the University of North Texas, died on May 29 after saving three friends who were struggling in the water.
Family members said Koduru was on an outing with five friends when three of them slipped into the water while fishing. He immediately jumped in to help. An excellent swimmer, he was able to save all three. However, his feet became entangled in a fishing wire or net, and he was unable to return to safety. The current pulled him underwater, and he was later found 20 feet deep.
The incident occurred at Toledo Bend Reservoir, located between Texas and Louisiana.
Sabine Parish Sheriff Aaron Mitchell confirmed that a 22-year-old man from Denton, Texas, drowned on May 29 near the spillway at Toledo Bend Dam while swimming with friends.
Koduru’s father, Rajender Reddy, mourned the loss of his son. “He was a brilliant student and had recently secured a job opportunity in the United States. But God has been unfair to us,” he said.
His brother, Ashtrith Reddy Koduru, has launched a fundraiser to help bring his body back to India for final rites.
“We are absolutely devastated, and our immediate priority is to transport his body from the United States back home to our parents and family in India,” the family wrote.
The Consulate General of India in Houston said it is in touch with the family and local authorities to assist with necessary procedures.
