US-India Strengthen Clean Energy Collaboration, Focus On Africa
India-West News Desk
WILMINGTON, DE – At the meeting between President Joe Biden and PM Narendra Modi, the United States and India announced an expanded collaboration aimed at accelerating the clean energy transition and creating high-quality jobs. This initiative highlights the shared commitment of both nations to combat climate change while boosting domestic manufacturing capacity for clean energy technologies and components.
The partnership will elevate bilateral technical, financial, and policy support, with a particular focus on building U.S. and Indian clean energy manufacturing capacity and enhancing cooperation in third countries, notably in Africa. This effort builds on several existing clean energy initiatives, including programs launched during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 2023 visit to the U.S. and the Strategic Clean Energy Partnership led by the U.S. Department of Energy and Indian ministries, the White House said.
A key goal of this collaboration is to unlock $1 billion in new multilateral financing through the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development. This funding will support India’s clean energy supply chain by expanding manufacturing capacity for solar, wind, battery, and energy grid systems. Over time, the U.S. and India aim to mobilize additional financing to further grow priority sectors of clean energy manufacturing, using both public and private financial tools to meet the growing demand for climate finance solutions.
By identifying and supporting pilot projects in clean energy sectors, including solar wafer manufacturing, wind turbine components, and energy storage technologies, the U.S. and India are poised to lead global efforts in clean economic development, the Biden administration said. This partnership not only strengthens the domestic clean energy industries of both nations but also sets an example for global cooperation in achieving sustainable economic growth and climate resilience.
The partnership’s long-term goal is to pioneer innovative financial models and mobilize private sector participation to meet the global demand for clean energy solutions.
In addition to expanding domestic capabilities, the U.S. and India are committed to supporting clean energy deployment in Africa, demonstrating a joint effort to foster sustainable development in emerging economies.
