Wildfire Smoke Spurs Raja Call For Oil Industry Emissions Cuts

CHICAGO, IL – Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) has urged the chief executives of BP, Chevron, Exxon Mobil and Shell to take immediate steps to reduce carbon emissions, citing scientific research linking fossil fuel pollution to increasingly severe wildfires across North America.

In letters sent to the companies’ CEOs, Krishnamoorthi argued that the oil and gas industry must acknowledge its role in contributing to climate impacts that are affecting communities through dangerous air quality and wildfire smoke.

“I am writing today urging you to take immediate steps to reduce carbon emissions, which have been directly linked to the increase in wildfires across North America,” Krishnamoorthi wrote. “As communities across the nation endure dangerous air quality and the growing impacts of wildfire smoke, the oil and gas industry must acknowledge its role in intensifying this crisis and take immediate, meaningful steps to reduce emissions.”

The congressman pointed to a July 16 episode in which wildfire smoke drifting south from Canada caused Chicago’s air quality to reach record levels, leading to public health warnings, event cancellations and facility closures. The smoke also affected other parts of the Midwest and Northeast, exposing millions of people to hazardous air pollution.

Krishnamoorthi cited research examining the connection between fossil fuel emissions and wildfire severity.

The letters argue that greenhouse gas emissions from the fossil fuel industry have contributed to conditions that intensify wildfires, including rising temperatures and prolonged dry periods.

“The hazardous air conditions experienced in Chicago and other cities show that wildfire impacts are no longer distant or abstract,” Krishnamoorthi wrote. “They are disrupting daily life, harming health, and straining communities right now.”
