Zohran Mamdani Lands On The Cover Of Time Magazine
India-West News Desk
NEW YORK, NY – It’s no longer easy for Zohran Mamdani, the son of Oscar-nominated filmmaker Mira Nair, to walk the streets of New York City. As Time Magazine reports, when the 33-year-old Democratic nominee for mayor leaves his Manhattan campaign office, crowds gather quickly—phones raised, traffic stalling, strangers rushing in to shake his hand. The attention isn’t always warm—hecklers sometimes shout “antisemitic!”—but more often it is star treatment, delivered in multiple languages and across generations.
Mamdani acknowledged the magazine’s feature, posting, “It’s a surreal experience to find myself on the cover of @time but it’s truly a reflection of all the work we’ve done together over the past ten months to bring us to this moment.”
Just a year ago, few New Yorkers even knew his name. Over the course of eight months, Mamdani transformed from a little-known state assemblyman into the frontrunner to lead America’s largest city. His rapid rise has made him a national figure—celebrated by progressives, attacked by conservatives, and even targeted by Donald Trump, who has questioned his immigration status and hinted at his arrest.
Mamdani, who would be New York’s first Muslim and South Asian mayor, was born in Uganda and became a U.S. citizen in 2018. To supporters, his brand of politics—direct, online-savvy, and focused on everyday economic struggles—has been an antidote to what they see as a stagnant Democratic establishment.
Time Magazine spoke with more than 30 lawmakers, allies, and critics to sketch a fuller picture. They describe a gifted yet untested politician: eloquent, young, and ideologically firm, but also pragmatic in his policy approach. He is a movement candidate who won by “being in touch with the streets,” yet now must prepare for the compromises of governing.
His breakthrough came in the June Democratic primary. Starting in the single digits, Mamdani built momentum with viral videos and neighborhood walkabouts. As Time notes, he “wore the mantle of democratic socialism in the world’s financial capital” and “refused to back away from criticism of Israel in the city with the largest Jewish community outside of Israel.” Supported by 50,000 volunteers, his campaign knocked on 1.6 million doors.
The victory alarmed New York’s power brokers. Both Andrew Cuomo and incumbent mayor Eric Adams are challenging him on independent ballot lines, but recent polling shows Mamdani holding double-digit leads over both. For Democrats nationally, his performance in office could become a defining case study of the party’s future direction.
Mamdani’s background is steeped in politics and art. Raised in Uganda, South Africa, and New York, he is the son of Mahmood Mamdani, a Columbia University scholar of postcolonialism, and filmmaker Mira Nair, an Academy Award–nominated director. Writer Amitav Ghosh told Time that Mamdani inherited from his father “a deep commitment to social justice” and from his mother “incredible energy” and a “fine aesthetic sense.”
His campaign style reflects that mix. Days after Trump’s 2024 reelection, Mamdani began interviewing Trump voters in Queens and the Bronx about their struggles—rent, food prices, Gaza. The viral video that resulted helped shape his campaign’s message: listening first, then tying policy to lived experience.
Married to illustrator Rama Duwaji, Mamdani continues to credit her with sharpening his political voice. Though his national profile is soaring, he insists his focus remains local: tackling high costs, expanding childcare, and addressing public safety.
As Time Magazine concludes, Mamdani’s story is no longer that of a long-shot candidate. It is the story of a politician who could redefine New York—and perhaps the Democratic Party itself.

I have some strong feelings about Mamdani. I believe he is anti-Modi and anti-India, which leads me to think he gets his information about India and Modi from unreliable sources, resulting in a distorted perspective. To me, this suggests he lacks critical thinking skills. A critical thinker should make decisions based on complete and balanced information.
In Pakistan, people are often indoctrinated from a young age to believe that Hindus and Muslims cannot coexist, and more broadly, that Muslims and non-Muslims (Kafirs) cannot live together. Interestingly, however, Pakistanis do not consider the Chinese and Americans to be Kafirs. I sense that some of these beliefs might influence Mamdani’s views, even though his mother is Hindu. I wonder if she, too, was subjected to similar indoctrination.

It is a sad day for this great nation. I believe that Time’s echelons are dominated by “THEM”.

Mamdani represents the new face of politics in the U.S. He is young, articulate, and rigorously trained in political philosophy, untainted by religious dogma and social stereotyping of race and culture. He is for economic diversity but not for economic hegemony of the few and the exploitation of hard-working people. The City of New York is a symbol of classical capitalism built on a cement mixed with the blood of poor people. It is now time for a change in the city and the nation. The old farts of both political parties, Republicans and Democrats, must move aside and clear the road for the young generation running with the torch of freedom.

TIME magazine has been in decline for a long time, a very similar fate to the New York Times, L.A. Times, Washington Post, etc., and the list goes on. Very few pay attention to their credibility since they are similar to Pravada! It is the three major TV networks that keep giving him favorable treatment, but they are all in decline, too. He may get elected in stupid cities like New York, Washington, Los Angeles, Chicago, SanFrancisco, etc. by giving free stuff and get his 2 cents’ worth of fame like those “squads” ladies in their own localities, but not much more outside of it.. Hopefully, Common sense will prevail in the end.

Mamdani is just not “antisemitic!”, he’s anti-Hindus too!
Combination of Hindu and Muslim always generate a militant Muslim, unfortunately!
He does not read and does not have complete data to come to a fair judgement.
He will be a disaster for New York.
