Diljit Dosanjh Addresses Political Pressures During Canada Tour

VANCOUVER – Punjabi global star Diljit Dosanjh has opened up about the growing pressures of navigating political sensitivities within the Punjabi diaspora, saying he faces criticism from both Indian nationalists and pro-Khalistan supporters.

Speaking during his concert in Edmonton on May 2 as part of his ongoing ‘Aura’ tour, Dosanjh described the difficult position he finds himself in, caught between opposing viewpoints that question his identity and intentions.

The moment came unexpectedly when a child in the audience shouted, “Punjabi aa gaye oye,” a slogan closely associated with Dosanjh’s rise on the global stage, particularly after he became the first Punjabi artist to perform at Coachella in 2023.

Responding to the child, Dosanjh turned reflective, addressing the broader criticism he regularly encounters.

“When I go to India, they say, ‘Khalistani aa gaya oye.’ When I come here, they say something else. I get abuses from both sides. I don’t get where I should go,” he told the crowd, gesturing toward a middle path. “There’s only one path I know I should follow.”

His remarks drew loud cheers from the audience, underscoring the resonance of his message among fans who span geographies and political divides.

The comments follow a tense moment just days earlier in Calgary, where Dosanjh paused his performance after spotting a group of protesters waving Khalistan flags in the crowd. Rather than escalating the situation, he chose to address it directly, telling them to leave and saying that while they were free to express themselves, he would continue focusing on representing Punjab on the global stage.

Dosanjh emphasized that his mission has always been cultural rather than political. As one of the most visible Punjabi artists globally, Dosanjh’s statements and performances are often scrutinized by multiple groups seeking to interpret or claim his stance.
