WASHINGTON, D.C. – Medicare Payment Advisory Commission (MedPAC) has announced the appointment of Dr. Amol Navathe as Vice Chair.
Navathe brings expertise in policy analysis and design to his role on the commission. He also has deep experience in physician and hospital economic behavior, along with the application of informatics and predictive analytics to health care. His data analytics and technology work has led to improvements in healthcare delivery at insurers and health systems.
He is also prominent for his scholarship on payment model design, especially in bundled payments. His unique scholarship features a bi-directional translation between fundamental scientific discovery and real-world practice, a press statement said.
Navathe is a practicing physician and economist, an associate professor and co-director of the Healthcare Transformation Institute, and associate director of the Center for Health Incentives and Behavioral Economics at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. He has served on MedPAC as a commissioner since 2019.
“I am truly honored to be placed in a leading role at MedPAC in this pivotal time of evolving U.S. healthcare,” said Navathe. “It is a great privilege to be in service to the United States, a responsibility I accept with the utmost gratitude and humility. Medicare needs clarity and oversight, as well as both a long- and short-term approach to national healthcare issues. It is my duty to help keep America healthy and safe within the existing system.”
Navathe’s father Dr. Sham Navathe, a faculty member at Georgia Tech, said he was “proud” with the appointment of his son to the commission.
