Bill Gates Flags Off First India Day Celebrations In Seattle

SEATTLE, WA – The inaugural India Day celebrations in the Greater Seattle area, held on August 17, was highlighted by Bill Gates, chairperson of the Gates Foundation, flagging it off.

Gates addressed over 2,000 members of the Indian American community, praising India’s leadership in innovation, technology, agriculture, and healthcare. He highlighted India’s global contributions, stating, “From manufacturing safe, low-cost vaccines to the remarkable leadership shown by the Indian diaspora to India’s Digital Public Infrastructure, India’s ingenuity is helping not just Indians, but the whole world.”

The event, themed “Unity in Diversity,” showcased India’s rich cultural heritage through various floats and performances representing all states and regions of India. These floats were crafted by prominent leaders of the Indian American community, reflecting significant aspects of India’s diverse culture.

The Consulate in Seattle tweeted, “A Most Memorable First: The India Day Celebration in Greater Seattle! All states of India showcase their floats and regional cultural performances in the heart of Bellevue. The entire Indian community comes together to honour India’s 78th Independence Day Celebrations.”

Distinguished participants included Congresswomen Suzan DelBene and Kim Schrier, Congressman Adam Smith, Washington Lieutenant Governor Denny Heck, and Washington Secretary of State Steve Hobbs. Mayors from Bellevue, Tacoma, Kent, Auburn, Renton, SeaTac, Snoqualmie, and Mercer Island also attended, supporting the Indian community.

Iconic buildings in the Seattle and Bellevue areas were illuminated in tricolors to mark the celebration.

The Indian Consulate expressed gratitude to Gates and other notable attendees for their support, acknowledging the event as a memorable first for the Greater Seattle area. (with ANI inputs)
