WASHINGTON, DC (ANI)- In a historic display of determination, US Senator Cory Booker delivered the second-longest floor speech in modern Senate history, speaking for 24 hours and 18 minutes. The New Jersey Democrat’s marathon speech surpassed the late Senator Strom Thurmond’s 1957 record.

Booker began his speech at 7 PM on March 31, vowing to speak as long as he physically could in protest against actions taken by Donald Trump’s administration. While his speech delayed Senate proceedings, it was largely symbolic and not aimed at blocking specific legislation.

With Democrats under increasing pressure from their voters to take a tougher stance against Trump, Booker’s speech stands out as a significant act of resistance in Trump’s second term.

During his remarks, Booker declared that the “country is in crisis,” criticizing a wide range of issues, including proposed cuts to healthcare programs and Elon Musk’s role in reshaping the federal government under Trump.

“I rise tonight because I believe sincerely that our country is in crisis,” Booker stated, emphasizing the harm inflicted on Americans’ safety, financial stability, and democracy.

Throughout the speech, Booker was joined by several Democratic colleagues, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, who showed their support by engaging in discussions with him on the Senate floor.
