India Posts Highest-Ever Annual Wind Energy Growth

NEW DELHI – Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Prahlad Joshi said on April 22 that India has recorded its highest-ever annual increase in wind energy capacity, with a historic 6.1 GW addition during 2025–26.

India currently ranks fourth globally in wind energy, with more than 56.1 GW of installed capacity and an additional 28 GW under implementation.

Emphasizing the sector’s untapped potential, the minister said India’s wind energy potential at 150-metre hub height is estimated at nearly 1,164 GW.

Wind energy plays a critical role in stabilizing India’s power system because its peak generation during evening and night hours aligns with periods of high demand.

India has introduced a dedicated wind component under Renewable Purchase Obligations to ensure sustained demand.

The country has strong supply-chain capabilities across blades, towers, gearboxes and other critical components. (IANS)
