Couple, Their Two Young Children Found Dead In New Jersey

PLAINSBORO, NJ (IANS) – A family of four has been found dead here in what officials suspect to be a case of murder-suicide, police said.

Police in Plainsboro who went to their home on October 4 evening responding to a request to check on their welfare found them dead, County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone said.

She identified the dead as Tej Pratap Singh, 43, Sonal Parihar, 42, their 10-year-old son and six-year-old daughter.

Ciccone did not say how the family died, but Daily Voice said that a spokesperson in her office ruled out shooting.

“This tragedy remains under investigation and autopsies are being performed today,” she said on October 5.

Plainsboro Mayor Peter Cantu said in a post, “What happened in our community is beyond comprehension.”

“We are saddened by this tragic event,” he added.

WABC TV reported that law enforcement sources, who were not identified, said that the man killed his family and then himself.

Family members, who gathered outside the home, told WCBS TV that the parents were a happy couple and could not believe what happened.

The station said that both worked in the information technology sector, one of them in human resources.

  • Domestic problems, sometimes ending in divorce, violence and even death and suicide are not surprising in all communities including Indian-Americans. Mandatory marriage counseling before weddings and visiting a marriage counselor whenever there are serious disagreements spurred by anger and ego, would help prevent such sad outcomes. Couples should agree to avoid insulting words that can provoke anger, and apologize to each other if that happens, cool off before resuming their disscussions.

    • Thank u for sound advice. I would add that if u are not happy with your spouse, then plan to walk off. For that see that you have adequate money. No need to waste your life fighting with each other.

  • I am a US raised Indian American from NJ, and over the years many Indians have shared their problems with me. I never judge, just offer an open ear and an open heart. Our community has great mastery of putting on a facade of success and achievement, but many have problems behind closed doors they are hesitant to share with family and friends. We stigmatize and shame people in our community for human problems universal to all societies. I am almost certain this couple may have been having struggles over something for a while, either individually or involving both. Maybe it reached a boiling point that Mr Singh felt killing himself and his family was the only way out rather than face it. Sad. We Indians need to mature and evolve beyond hiding behind our facade of affluence, be real about our problems and support one another through hard times. I am sorry, but your 7-8 figure cannot solve everything! Get real!

  • No matter what happen, husband should not kill his family. I feel, he had every thing, what a family should have. He was blessed.

  • This is a general comment.

Disclaimer: I do not know this family directly or indirectly. information is what is available online and social media.
An individual may react to stress by becoming anxious or depressed, by developing a physical symptom, by running away, drinking alcohol, overeating, starting an affair, or in limitless other ways. Common subjective responses are anxiety, sadness, fear, rage, guilt, and shame. Acute and reactivated stress may be manifested by restlessness, irritability, fatigue, increased startle reaction, and a feeling of tension. Inability to concentrate, sleep disturbances (insomnia, bad dreams ) and somatic preoccupations sometimes lead to self medication.

And individual experiences stress when adaptive capacity is overwhelmed by events. The event may be an insignificant one when objectively considered, and even favorable changes (eg. promotion and transfer) requiring adaptive behavior can produce stress. For everyone. stress is subjectively defined, and the response to stress is a function of each person’s personality and physiological endowment.

Opinion differs about what events are most apt to produce stress reactions. The causes of stress are different at different ages -eg, in young adulthood, the sources of stress are found in the marriage or parent child relationship, the employment relationship, and the struggle to achieve financial stability; in the middle years, the focus shifts to changing spousal relationships, problems with aging parents and problems associated with having young adult offspring who themselves are encountering stressful situations; in old age the principal concerns are apt to be retirement, loss of physical and mental capacity, major personal losses and thoughts of death.
Mental illness is akin to to any other illness, except, there are no lab tests to diagnose them. In Indian population (NRI) there is a stigma about seeking help from professionals. Also there are a lot of anger issues related to stress that is cumulative and resulting in outburst of violence.
