TORONTO-Cricket Canada has named Monty Desai as head coach of the men’s national team, bringing him back to stabilize the setup as the organization faces corruption allegations under investigation by the International Cricket Council.
The 51-year-old previously served as Canada’s interim coach in 2019. His appointment comes after a difficult 2026 T20 World Cup campaign in which Canada failed to win a match. The International Cricket Council’s anti-corruption unit is examining an over bowled by captain Dilpreet Bajwa against New Zealand, in which 15 runs were conceded.
Desai most recently coached Nepal’s national team in 2023 and 2024, helping it retain one-day international status. He said his earlier stint in Canada gives him insight into the team’s potential.
“My previous experience in Canada has given me a clear understanding of the system’s potential and the passion that exists for the game,” Desai said in a press release. “Canada has a similar opportunity, and my focus will be on building a culture that translates this potential into consistent performances on the international stage.”
Cricket Canada president Arvinder Khosa said Desai’s appointment is part of a broader effort to rebuild the program. “Our foremost priority is to restore Cricket Canada’s prominence through performance, professionalism, and a renewed and vitalized sense of purpose,” Khosa said in the same release.
Desai also coached the Kathmandu Gurkhas last year and has worked with Afghanistan, gaining experience with developing cricket nations.
