COLORADO SPRINGS, CO – A licensed plastic surgeon in Colorado, Rupesh Jain, 53, is facing multiple felony charges following a shooting spree on September 16 that left one man injured. Jain, who is currently under a mental health hold at the El Paso County jail, is charged with second-degree assault, reckless endangerment, illegal discharge of a firearm, and other crimes.
The incident began around 6:15 a.m. when Colorado Springs Police responded to a call from a woman whose friend had been shot through the wall of her apartment. The victim, 25-year-old Laken Duerschmidt, sustained a gunshot wound to his forearm but is expected to recover. Upon investigation, police found multiple shell casings and bullet holes in Jain’s adjoining apartment.
As officers were at the scene, reports came in of further shootings. Jain had targeted two KeyBank locations, one of which he had previously threatened in July, and a Village Inn restaurant. The manager of the Village Inn reported that Jain fired multiple rounds at the front door before asking for a key lime pie.
Police arrested Jain when he returned to his apartment, still holding the pie. Jain told officers he had planned to kill himself after the rampage, asking them to shoot him. His actions caused over $100,000 in damages, including the destruction of two ATMs.
Jain remains in custody on a $500,000 bond, with no active practice found in Colorado Springs despite his medical license.
