NEW DELHI-The FIFA World Cup 2026 has reached the 100-goal mark in just 33 matches, making it the fastest edition in 68 years to achieve the milestone. Only the 1954 tournament in Switzerland reached 100 goals quicker, doing so in 20 matches.

The tournament got underway on June 12 when Mexico’s Julian Quinones opened the scoring in a 2-0 win over South Africa. The 100th goal of the tournament came on Sunday (IST), when Netherlands forward Cody Gakpo scored his team’s third goal in a 5-1 victory over Sweden.

The achievement places the 2026 World Cup ahead of several previous editions. The tournament reached 100 goals in 36 matches in both 1982 and 2014, while the milestone took 38 matches in 1978 and 1994.

The Netherlands also celebrated a landmark of its own. The Dutch became only the eighth nation in FIFA World Cup history to score 100 goals. Against Sweden, Brian Brobbey gave the Netherlands an early lead from a Gakpo cross inside five minutes before adding a second goal in the 17th minute. That strike marked the Netherlands’ 100th goal in World Cup history.

The tournament also reached another historic milestone when the Group F match between Japan and Tunisia at Monterrey Stadium became the 1,000th match in FIFA World Cup history.

Reflecting on the occasion, FIFA said: “Match 1,000 symbolises longevity and humanity’s enduring love for football and the FIFA World Cup. But it also is a testament to football’s unique knack for breaking through barriers and galvanising communities and nations to come together.”

The FIFA World Cup 2026, being played across North America, features 48 nations divided into 12 groups. The top two teams from each group, along with the eight best third-placed finishers, will advance to the knockout stage.

With the tournament already reaching several milestones, including 100 goals in 33 matches and the 1,000th match in FIFA World Cup history, the 2026 edition has made a notable start. (IANS)
