FRISCO, TX – In an emotional victory, Burt Thakur secured the Place 2 seat on the Frisco City Council in a runoff election on June 7, defeating incumbent Tammy Meinershagen. Thakur’s win is a landmark moment for Frisco, as he is now the first Indian American to serve on its city council.
Thakur, a 42-year-old engineer, military veteran, and even a past game show champion, reflected on the historical weight of his election. He shared with the media that on the night of the vote, he was surrounded by fellow Indian Americans, many of whom were “tears streaming down their faces,” underscoring the profound impact of his achievement.
This pioneering election is particularly notable in Frisco, where Indian Americans make up roughly 15% of the city’s residents. Thakur attributed his success to a vigorous campaign built on direct engagement. “Our campaign did so much work. We knocked on thousands of doors,” he told CBS, emphasizing a positive approach by adding, “I think one of the coolest things about the campaign was I had never sent out an attack ad.”
Thakur’s conservative stance resonated with voters and garnered significant endorsements, including one from Congressman Brandon Gill. On May 30, Gill publicly supported Thakur, tweeting, “We need conservatives in every elected office in North Texas. For Frisco City Council Place 2, @BurtThakurTX is the conservative. Burt has my complete endorsement!”
