India Warns China As It Plans World’s Largest Dam On Brahmaputra
NEW DELHI, (ANI) – India has strongly urged China to ensure that its upstream activities on the Brahmaputra River do not adversely impact downstream states, following reports of a mega dam project under construction in the Tibet region.
The river, known as the Yarlung Tsangpo in Tibet, is vital to the livelihoods of millions in India and Bangladesh.
The Brahmaputra River sustains millions across Assam and the northeastern region, making China’s upstream projects a critical geopolitical and ecological concern.
The MEA’s remarks were echoed by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who expressed alarm over the dam’s construction. Speaking to reporters in Guwahati, Sarma confirmed that Assam has conveyed its concerns to New Delhi. “The Brahmaputra is our lifeline, and the central government must ensure that our interests are protected,” he asserted.
Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal addressed the issue during a press briefing in New Delhi, emphasizing India’s concerns. “The Chinese side has been urged to ensure that the interests of downstream states of the Brahmaputra are not harmed by activities in upstream areas,” he stated.
The concerns follow information from Chinese state media on December 25, 2024, about a hydropower project on the Yarlung Tsangpo. The announcement has reignited fears among Indian officials, experts, and citizens about the potential impact of such projects on water flow, ecology, and the livelihoods of those dependent on the Brahmaputra.
Jaiswal reiterated India’s position as a lower riparian state with established user rights over the river’s waters. “We have consistently expressed, through expert-level and diplomatic channels, our views and concerns to the Chinese side regarding mega projects on transboundary rivers,” he said, adding that transparency and consultation with downstream countries are essential.
India has pledged to closely monitor developments and take necessary measures to safeguard its interests.
