Indian American Lawyer Fired For Affair With CEO

ATLANTA, GA – Nabanita Chaterjee Nag, an Indian American lawyer and Chief Legal Officer at Norfolk Southern Corporation, has been fired following an investigation into an inappropriate workplace relationship with CEO Alan Shaw.

Shaw was also terminated after it was found that their consensual relationship violated the company’s policies and code of ethics.

In a statement, Norfolk Southern Corporation clarified that while the relationship was consensual, it breached corporate guidelines. “The move comes in connection with preliminary findings from an ongoing investigation that determined Shaw violated company policies by engaging in a consensual relationship with the company’s chief legal officer. Shaw’s departure is unrelated to the company’s performance, financial reporting, or operations,” the company said.

Nag, who joined Norfolk Southern in 2020 as General Counsel, was promoted to Chief Legal Officer in 2022 and later appointed Executive Vice President of Corporate Affairs in 2023. Prior to joining the railroad company, she had worked at Goldman Sachs.

She has been recognized as an Atlanta Business Chronicle 2024 Corporate Counsel Award Honoree. She was selected for her exceptional leadership as General Counsel, guiding Norfolk Southern’s legal team through a significant corporate crisis and helping the company emerge stronger. These prestigious awards celebrate Georgia’s top attorneys working in corporate legal departments, associations, and private sector organizations.

A graduate of Georgetown University with a bachelor’s degree in government and English, Nag went on to earn her Juris Doctor from the New York University School of Law.
