LOS ANGELES, CA – A special screening of Laapataa Ladies, directed by Kiran Rao, took place at the Ross House in Los Angeles, marking an evening dedicated to Indian cinema. The film, which addresses themes of identity and empowerment, is India’s official entry for the 2025 Oscars. The event began with an introduction by Academy Award-winning composer Gustavo Santaolalla.

After the screening, a Q&A session was moderated by journalist Piya Sinha Roy, with director Kiran Rao, actor-producer Aamir Khan, and producer Jyoti Deshpande on the panel. They shared insights into the film’s creative process, the inspiration for its satirical storytelling, and its cultural relevance. The panel also discussed the collaboration that brought the film, based on Biplab Goswami’s award-winning story, to life.

The screening was attended by a diverse group, including film enthusiasts and industry professionals, reflecting the global interest in Indian cinema. Laapataa Ladies, produced by Aamir Khan Productions and Jio Studios, continues to receive attention internationally for its narrative and humor.

Kiran Rao, known for her work as a filmmaker, producer, and writer, has contributed to several critically acclaimed films such as Dhobi Ghat, Dangal, and Secret Superstar. Outside of filmmaking, she co-founded the Paani Foundation, which focuses on drought prevention and sustainable agriculture in Maharashtra, India.

Rajendra Vora, Founder and President of the Beverly Hills Jain Social Group, welcomed Kiran Rao and Aamir Khan and expressed confidence that Laapataa Ladies would be shortlisted for the Oscars.

  • The credit goes entirely to Kiran Rao and the actors they did an incredible job and one of the best movies I’ve seen in recent times and it’s a better Oscar nominated movie than some stupid movies like Laggan, which was demeaning and denigrating to Indians.
