WASHINGTON, D.C. – The offices of Congressmen Shri Thanedar (D-MI) and Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) confirmed that their names appeared on a hitlist recovered from the suspect in the recent Minnesota shooting that targeted state lawmakers.
On June 17, both the U.S. Capitol Police and the FBI separately informed Congressman Thanedar of his inclusion in the list. “Today, I was informed by Capitol Police and the FBI that my name was listed in documents found in the possession of the alleged Minnesota shooter,” Thanedar stated. He added that while he and his staff do not feel they are in immediate danger due to the suspect’s capture, precautionary safety measures are being taken.
Congressman Krishnamoorthi also issued a statement: “I have been informed that my name was included in the notes of the Minnesota suspect accused of assassinating an elected official, murdering her husband, and targeting others.”
The shooter, 57-year-old Vance Luther Boelter, is accused of carrying out a politically motivated shooting spree on June 14. The attack tragically killed former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark, and severely wounded State Senator John Hoffman and his wife.
Documents recovered from Boelter’s vehicle and property included a target list naming at least 45 public officials, all Democrats. This list included U.S. Senators Amy Klobuchar and Tina Smith.
Court filings indicate that Boelter used online data broker services to gather address information and maintained detailed surveillance notes. Materials recovered from the scene also included a list of data-broker websites, raising broader concerns about digital privacy and national security.
Both Congressmen condemned the violence. “The heinous crimes the shooter allegedly committed are unequivocally politically motivated and should be condemned by everyone across the political spectrum,” Thanedar said. “There is no place for political violence in a democracy.” Krishnamoorthi echoed this sentiment, stating, “Political violence has no place in America — full stop. Even in this time of great division, we should all agree on that.”
