Payal Kapadia First Indian To Get Golden Globes Best Director Nomination

Indian filmmaker Payal Kapadia has created history as the first Indian director to be nominated for Best Director at the Golden Globes. Her film All We Imagine As Light also earned a nomination for Best Non-English Language Motion Picture, solidifying its place as a standout in global cinema.
In the Best Non-English Language Motion Picture category, All We Imagine As Light competes against acclaimed international films including France’s Emilia Perez (the most-nominated film at this year’s Golden Globes), The Girl With the Needle, I’m Still Here, The Seed of the Sacred Fig, and Vermiglio. For the Best Director honor, Payal Kapadia stands alongside renowned filmmakers Jacques Audiard (Emilia Pérez), Sean Baker (Anora), Edward Berger (Conclave), Brady Corbet (The Brutalist), and Coralie Fargeat (The Substance).
All We Imagine As Light, an Indo-French co-production, premiered in competition at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, where it became the first Indian film in three decades to compete and won the prestigious Grand Prix. The film also received the Jury Grand Prize at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards, Best International Feature at the Gotham Awards, and Best International Film at the New York Film Critics Circle, among other accolades.
The narrative follows Prabha, a nurse navigating personal challenges, and her roommate Anu in a coastal town. Featuring a stellar cast that includes Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha, and Chhaya Kadam, the film explores themes of resilience and self-discovery.
Kapadia’s groundbreaking achievement highlights the growing recognition of Indian cinema on the global stage, with the Golden Globes celebrating the diversity of international storytelling.
