SAN MATEO, CA — A San Mateo couple who drowned at Kings Canyon National Park over Memorial Day weekend have been identified as Parth Patel, 30, and his wife, Dharti Patel, 29, authorities said.
The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office identified the victims on June 3.
The couple died on June 1 after visiting Roaring River Falls in Kings Canyon National Park.
Officials have not disclosed how the couple entered the water, and the circumstances surrounding the drownings remain under investigation.
The Ventura County Star reported, citing social media accounts, that Dharti Patel may have slipped on rocks near the waterfall while attempting to take a photograph. It also reported that Parth Patel entered the water in an effort to help her before both were swept away. Authorities have not confirmed those details.
The National Park Service has repeatedly warned visitors about hazardous conditions around the waterfall.
“The rocks are slippery and the currents below the surface of the water can easily drag you under,” the National Park Service said in a public safety warning. The agency added that drowning in rivers is the leading cause of death in Sequoia and Kings Canyon national parks.
