SACRAMENTO, CA – Sumiti Mehta was officially sworn in as a member of California’s Natomas Unified School District Board of Trustees, with State Senator Angelique Ashby administering the oath of office. The Trustees elected their officers for 2025 during the ceremony: Micah Grant as President, Scott Dosick as Vice President, and Mehta as Clerk.
A long-time Natomas resident, Sumiti Mehta has been dedicated to local education and community service since 2009. She has worked to address the challenges faced by students, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, and has served on the NP3 School Board, the Natomas Parks and Recreation Commission, and various Natomas Unified School District committees, including the Parent Advisory Committee and the Community Engagement Initiative.
As a parent of two sons—one a sophomore at UCLA and the other an eighth grader—Mehta brings a personal understanding of the struggles families face navigating the education system. Raised in India, she moved to the U.S. with her husband in 2007. Mehta shares, “As an immigrant, mom, parent, and a woman of color, I intimately understand the hurdles faced by parents who must become fierce advocates for their children. My transformation from an anxious parent with a heavy accent to an established youth advocate has deeply influenced my dedication to this cause.”
As a Trustee, Sumiti Mehta is focused on ensuring that all students and families have access to quality education. She plans to address barriers such as transportation and language access while fostering safe, inclusive school environments. Her goal is to support teachers, staff, and the broader school community in creating transparent processes that allow every child to thrive.
In addition to her trustee role, Sumiti Mehta is an active volunteer with organizations like Reading Partners and the Sacramento Public Library.
