WASHINGTON, D.C. – The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and other forecasters are warning of an exceptionally hot summer across the United States, with no region expected to experience cooler-than-average temperatures.

According to NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center, summer 2025 is projected to bring “overwhelmingly above normal” heat from coast to coast, with particularly high temperatures likely in the West, Southwest, Florida, and New England. Alaska is also expected to see above-normal temperatures.

The seasonal outlook also points to a drier-than-average summer for large parts of the Northwest, Northern Rockies, Great Plains, and Southwest. Drought conditions in these areas are expected to persist or worsen, according to both NOAA and private meteorologists. In contrast, portions of the Eastern U.S. may see increased rainfall, offering some potential drought relief later in June.

The extended dry spell, coupled with intense heat, raises serious wildfire concerns. The National Interagency Coordination Center notes elevated fire risks beginning in June across the coastal Southeast, central Texas, the Four Corners region, and parts of California and the Pacific Northwest. By July and August, the fire threat is forecast to expand to Hawaii, the Southern Plains, the Great Basin, and additional areas of California and the Northwest.

Smoke from wildfires in Canada is also likely to affect the U.S., particularly in the northwestern and north-central regions, worsening air quality and posing health concerns for vulnerable populations.

Beyond environmental risks, the extreme heat could also drive-up cooling costs and increase the threat of heat-related illness and fatalities.

Meteorological summer began June 1.
