LAKE TAWAKONI, TX – A new temple dedicated to Goddess Samayapuram Mariyamman is taking shape on a 10-acre site near Lake Tawakoni, marking the first shrine of its kind in the United States.
The effort is being led by Tharagram Baashyam and his wife, Saraswati, who envision a space that mirrors both the architecture and rituals of the original temple in Tiruchirappalli.
The idols for the shrine—including those of Goddess Mariyamman, Karuppannasamy, and Ayyanar—are being crafted in Mamallapuram near Chennai. In keeping with the traditions of the original, the main deity will be fashioned in herbal clay, a form believed to possess healing and protective powers.
Mariyamman, regarded as a manifestation of Adi Parashakti, is deeply revered as the goddess of health, prosperity, and protection. Rituals associated with the month of Aadi, such as the offering of ragi porridge and the use of neem leaves, will be maintained. Facilities for large-scale ceremonies and community offerings are also planned, with the nearby lake evoking comparisons to the Cauvery River that flows past the temple in India.
The project has faced hurdles in transporting and installing idols—particularly those bearing traditional weapons—but with community backing, most approvals are now in place. Some final permissions remain pending.
Once complete, the temple is expected to become a cultural and spiritual hub for Indian Americans, while also offering devotees the chance to perform Kulaideivam pujas locally, without the need for yearly travel to Tamil Nadu. (ANI)
