NEW YORK, NY – A video showing an Indian American couple engaging in antisemitic behavior and has resulted in a storm on social media. The clip posted by right wing journalist and influencer Andy Ngo shows Kurush Mistry and Shailja Gupta, covering posters of kidnapped Israelis with signs bearing the message, “Occupiers face consequences” and “Israel is an apartheid state and commits genocide.”
The video recorded on November 9, also shows the woman telling a Jewish man observing them pasting to “go back to your country” and Gupta going on to insult the man, calling him an “uneducated prick” and accusing all Israelis of being “rapists”. The identity of the Jewish man in the video has not been made public.
The reaction online was immediate. Several expressed shock at Gupta’s venom and foul mouth. Others questioned her statements. StarNHSolar posted on reddit: The hypocrisy of the Indian immigrant lady telling the guy that was born and bred in the USA to go back to his country. And then for some reason she claimed her home country was Palestine?
Meanwhile, Freepoint Commodities where Mistry worked, without mentioning him by name indicated that he had been fired in a LinkedIn post which read, that the company “is committed to fostering a culture of mutual respect and tolerance. Noting that while they “welcome the diversity of views and opinions held by our employees,” the company “does not tolerate discrimination and hate speech directed against any group. We are aware of the recent antisemitic incident reported on social media, and the individual involved is no longer associated with Freepoint.”
Mistry is a 2003 alumnus of India’s leading business management institution IIM Ahmedabad. He also holds a certificate from The Institute of Chartered Accountants in India.
Social media postings were also rife about his wife Shailja Gupta with netzines digging up information on her Bollywood connections as a visual artist, filmmaker and emerging tech strategic consultant for the past 29 years. The official LinkedIn account says she is the founder of Pocket Box Office, a company which specialises in “merchandising memorabilia,” “vinyl toy manufacturing” and “ai avatars based storytelling.”
She has also worked as the head of marketing for various Bollywood films including ‘Chennai Express,’ and ‘Singham Returns’ among others.
