NEW YORK, NY – On the eve of the New York City mayoral election on November 4, President Donald Trump made a series of threats and controversial statements aimed at influencing the outcome, including warning that federal funding to the city could be withheld if left-wing candidate Zohran Mamdani were elected. Experts have said Trump does not have the legal authority to cut such funding, and some observers have described his last-minute remarks and social media posts as potential election interference.

Zohran Mamdani directly addressed Trump’s threats at a campaign event in Queens on November 3. “I will address that threat for what it is: It is a threat. It is not the law,” Mamdani said, according to the New York Times. “And too often, we treat everything that comes out of Donald Trump’s mouth as if it is already legal, just by virtue of who is saying it.” Mamdani added that federal funding is not something granted by the president but rather funds that New York City is legally entitled to receive.

Trump, who has endorsed Andrew Cuomo—running as an independent—in the mayoral race, repeatedly labeled Mamdani a “communist” and urged voters to back Cuomo instead. He also made a highly controversial statement targeting Jewish voters, writing on Truth Social that any Jewish person who supports Mamdani would be a “stupid person” and claiming Mamdani is a “proven and self-professed Jew hater.”

Mamdani criticized the president’s intervention, saying the MAGA movement’s support for Cuomo reflects Trump’s interest in securing a mayor aligned with his administration rather than the city’s best interests.

Legal experts and election observers note that Trump’s comments, especially those made just days before the election, raise serious concerns about attempts to unduly influence voters and potentially violate election laws.
