LOS ANGELES, CA – Screenwriter Zarna Garg is set to star in a multi-camera comedy pilot titled “Zarna”, which has been greenlit by CBS. The show, produced by Warner Bros. Television under Kaling International’s overall deal, boasts an impressive team of executive producers, including Mindy Kaling, Jessica Kumai Scott, Howard Klein, Kevin Hart, Bryan Smiley, and Mike Stein. Darlene Hunt joins Zarna Garg as a writer, executive producer, and showrunner, as reported by Variety.
The official logline describes “Zarna” as the story of “a proud immigrant woman raising her American-born children on Indian values. Now that her kids are growing older, she’s ready to chase her own American dream.” Garg’s personal life and comedic style align closely with this premise, making the project a reflection of her unique voice and experiences.
Known for her clean, family-friendly comedy, Zarna Garg captivates audiences with her sharp wit, maternal humor, and reflections on Indian and American life, often performing in a kurta and bindi. Her 2023 Amazon Prime Video special, “One in a Billion,” explored topics such as matchmaking, entitled kids, clueless husbands, and tyrannical mothers-in-law.
In addition to her stand-up career, Garg’s talents extend to screenwriting. Her screenplay “Rearranged” won Best Comedy Screenplay at the 2019 Austin Film Festival and was a semi-finalist for the Academy Nicholl Fellowships. She also starred in the comedy film “A Nice Indian Boy.”
Zarna Garg credits her upbringing in Bombay, life in multiple countries, and immigration journey to the U.S. as inspirations for her storytelling. On her website, she shares how she “garba-d” her way into entertainment, determined to amplify the voice of a happy, brown, immigrant woman in the industry.
