CUPERTINO, CA – Apple’s newest launch, the iPhone Air, marks the company’s thinnest smartphone to date.
Breaking with Apple’s usual practice of spotlighting executives like CEO Tim Cook, the Cupertino event gave designer Abidur Chowdhury the stage to introduce the device.
Calm and confident, Chowdhury described the phone as a fusion of innovation and elegance—a tangible piece of the future. He called it “a paradox you have to hold to believe.”
Chowdhury, a London-born industrial designer now based in San Francisco, played a central role in shaping the iPhone Air. The device is a third thinner than previous models and features a single telephoto lens enhanced by AI photography software. Despite a smaller, high-density battery, it leverages advanced battery-saving technology to deliver all-day power—a design challenge Chowdhury said was key to the project.
Joining Apple in January 2019, Chowdhury, who has a Bangladeshi background, brought with him a wealth of experience from his consultancy, Abidur Chowdhury Design, where he collaborated with design agencies and innovative companies in 2018–2019. Earlier, he worked as an industrial designer at Layer Design in London and completed internships at Cambridge Consultants and Curventa in the UK.
Chowdhury holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Product Design and Technology from Loughborough University, earning accolades including the 3D Hubs Student Grant, the James Dyson Foundation Bursary, and a Red Dot Design Award in 2016.
On his personal website, Chowdhury emphasizes his passion for problem-solving and learning new skills, noting that he is most excited by “creating innovative products people can’t bear to be without.”
