MUMBAI (ANI)– Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has voiced his frustration over the censorship challenges faced by the biographical drama Phule, directed by Ananth Mahadevan.

Starring Pratik Gandhi and Patralekhaa as social reformers Jyotirao and Savitribai Phule, the film was originally scheduled for release on April 11, Jyotirao Phule’s birth anniversary. However, it was postponed following objections from a section of the Brahmin community.

Kashyap questioned the ongoing debate around casteism in India posting,
“Bhai mil ke decide kar lo. India mein casteism hai ya nahi…” (Brother, let’s decide together. Does casteism exist in India or not?)

The Gangs of Wasseypur director argued that Phule is one of several films facing suppression for tackling uncomfortable truths. He referenced other projects like Punjab 95Tees, and Dhadak 2, suggesting a troubling trend in the way bold narratives are being silenced.

Recalling his own early theatre production on the lives of the Phules, Kashyap questioned how the protesting groups gained access to the film before its official release and why they were offended if casteism no longer existed, as claimed by some.

He also criticized the Central Board of Film Certification for its lack of transparency, stating it had failed to explain the specific concerns behind the cuts.
