NEW YORK, NY – In 1974, the first mandir of BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha in North America was inaugurated by Pramukh Swami Maharaj in Flushing, New York. This year, BAPS marked 50 years of spiritual upliftment, community service, and cultural preservation with a grand celebration held in the same city where it all began.

The festivities, spanning two weekends, drew thousands of visitors from across the country. The event highlighted BAPS’s impressive journey, which started with just a handful of devotees and has since evolved into one of the most prominent Hindu organizations in the U.S., now overseeing more than 115 mandirs across North America. A special interactive exhibition showcased the history and contributions of BAPS over the last five decades.

Congressman Tom Suozzi expressed his admiration, stating, “The journey of BAPS is remarkable.” He presented the organization with a U.S. Capitol flag, flown in honor of BAPS’s 50 years of service and dedication.

The foundation of BAPS in North America is rooted in the teachings of Pramukh Swami Maharaj, whose motto, “In the Joy of Others, Lies Our Own,” continues to inspire millions. This sentiment was echoed by Chaitanyanand Swami from the International Society of Krishna Consciousness, who noted, “BAPS is an example of how society can live together and serve together in a loving, friendly way.”

The event carried the blessings of the current spiritual leader, Mahant Swami Maharaj, who sent his wishes from India. A distinguished lineup of dignitaries and community leaders also graced the occasion.

Earlier this year, the New York State Senate and Assembly passed resolutions honoring the 50th anniversary of BAPS’s first mandir in North America. Sponsored by Senator John Liu and Assemblymember Nily Rozic, the resolutions celebrated BAPS’s spiritual, social, and community contributions.

  • Like this sentiment, “how society can live together and serve together in a loving, friendly way.”.

I have visited Gurudwara with my Sikh friends and had several meals in Langar. In the similar manner my Sikh friends have visited my temple and have taken part in some religious activities, and specially during Navratri doing garba. This is specially notable as it starts tomorrow.

We do not take part in desecration of any religious place!

Those who feel strongly should convey this message to their friends, family and “followers”!
