BENGALURU – Ride-hailing major Uber on February 22 signed an agreement with the government’s e-commerce platform Open Network for Digital Commerce to explore integration with the network to expand the range of mobility offerings on the Uber app.

Dara Khosrowshahi, Uber’s global CEO, spoke with Infosys Chairman Nandan Nilekani here during an event. “India is one of the toughest markets out there. The Indian customer is so demanding and doesn’t want to pay for anything,” Khosrowshahi laughingly delivered the truth.

Despite the challenge, Khosrowshahi said, “India is the gateway to the world for us,” and that if Uber succeeded in India it would set the standard for the company in other markets

The agreement with ONDC would “strengthen Uber’s mission of bringing safe, affordable, and reliable rides to all Indians,” he said.

The company helps 900,000 Indians earn a living each month by driving with Uber which is available across 125 cities.
