NJ Candidate Stirs The Pot, Asserting She Is The Only Dem Who Supports Israel

EDISON, NJ – Fissures were exposed again within the Democratic Party after remarks by Tina Shah triggered a political row and drew renewed attention to internal divisions over Israel.
Shah, a physician and former White House adviser during the Obama administration, is running in the Democratic primary for New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District. She came under scrutiny after a April 26 audio clip surfaced in which she described herself as the only Democrat in the race who fully supports Israel.
In the recording, Shah calls herself “a pro Israel candidate” and expresses support for “unconditional aid,” adding that she is “the ONLY candidate” in the contest who backs Israel without conditions. The assertion quickly became the focal point of debate, with opponents and activists questioning both the claim and its implications.
While some pro Israel Democrats have defended strong US backing for Israel, progressive voices have intensified calls for limits on military aid and greater emphasis on humanitarian concerns citing Palestinian fatalities that have mounted into the tens of thousands in the aftermath of the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack on Israel as well as the ongoing war with Iran.
Prominent progressives such as Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez have argued for stricter conditions on US assistance and stronger protections for civilians. At the same time, party leaders including Chuck Schumer have maintained support for Israel while urging increased humanitarian aid to Gaza.
