BETHLEHEM, PA – Lehigh University has appointed Richard Verma, former U.S. Ambassador to India and Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resources, as its first President’s Distinguished Fellow. A 1990 Lehigh graduate and former university trustee, Verma will begin his six-month appointment on February 1, 2025.

In this role, Richard Verma will mentor students, lead discussions on global and national issues, deliver a public lecture, and share leadership insights. He will visit Lehigh’s Bethlehem campus and also host programs in New York City and Washington, D.C.

Lehigh President Joseph J. Helble highlighted the significance of Verma’s appointment, stating that his career in government and diplomacy would provide students with valuable learning opportunities.

Richard Verma, who attended Lehigh on an Air Force ROTC scholarship, expressed his excitement about reconnecting with the university. “Lehigh has been a key part of my life for over 35 years, and I’m excited to discuss the international issues shaping today’s world,” he said.

Verma’s career includes key roles such as Deputy Secretary of State, Assistant Secretary of State for Legislative Affairs, and National Security Advisor to the Senate Majority Leader. He also served as General Counsel and Head of Global Public Policy at Mastercard and is a U.S. Air Force veteran.
