NEW YORK, NY – The Global Organization of People of Indian Origin (New York Chapter), Indian Diaspora Center, and the Indian American Kerala Center organized a talk titled “India’s Role as a Peacemaker Since Independence,” featuring former Ambassador T.P. Sreenivasan. The event, held at the Dr. Thomas Abraham Library Hall at the Kerala Center, celebrated the 77th anniversary of India’s independence and included a lively discussion with community leaders from various organizations.
Ambassador Sreenivasan discussed India’s emergence as a global messenger of peace in the 21st century, despite the challenges posed by an undefined global order.
“India is seen today not as a pacifist state, but as an aspiring world power,” Sreenivasan stated. Sreenivasan highlighted the challenges posed by China, including territorial incursions and trade imbalances, and stressed India’s efforts to counter these through negotiations, defense strengthening, and international cooperation. He also noted India’s strengthening relationships with the United States and Russia, and its increased engagement with the Global South, as evidenced by recent G20 meetings.
Addressing demands for India to mediate in conflicts like the Russia-Ukraine war and the Israel-Palestine war, Sreenivasan expressed caution. He emphasized that these conflicts differ from past wars, with each side seeking decisive victories and the creation of a new global order. India, having learned from past mediation efforts, believes in resolving conflicts through bilateral discussions and maintaining open dialogue.
The event concluded with an active discussion among attendees, who exchanged ideas and praised India’s constructive global engagement. Kerala Center Board Member May Philip provided closing remarks and a vote of thanks.
