WASHINGTON, DC – During the annual summit of Indian American Impact, a prominent think tank supporting Indian Americans in politics, Vice President Kamala Harris emphasized the need for greater representation of the community in elected offices.

Addressing a packed room of Indian Americans here, Harris highlighted the disparity between the growing population of Indian Americans and their underrepresentation in elected positions.

“While there has been increased participation from Indian Americans in the electoral process, the numbers still do not reflect the size of our growing population,” remarked Harris. She commended the efforts of organizations like Indian American Impact in supporting and funding candidates from the community, noting their significant role in electing not only community members but also senators in states like Georgia.

Harris underscored the importance of diversity in governance, urging those who have run for office or aspire to do so to take the leap. “You must know that you are not alone. There is so much that we still must do as a country and a lot of the work that we each do, which is why we are here together, is born out of a belief in the promise of America. And dare I say that I am empirical evidence of the promise of America,” said the vice president.

Deepak Raj, co-founder and treasurer of Indian American Impact, acknowledged Harris’s pivotal role in the organization’s formation eight years ago, underscoring her enduring commitment to fostering political engagement and representation within the Indian American community.
