Sakshi Malik: I Am Being Threatened, Brij Bhushan Meddling
NEW DELHI (ANI) – Indian wrestler Sakshi Malik recently shared a video on her X handle, claiming she is receiving threats and appealing to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for intervention to safeguard the future of Indian wrestling.
In her video, Malik voiced her concerns over the Wrestling Federation of India alleging that the federation continues to operate despite a court order. She revealed she has been threatened with serious corruption charges, adding to her distress.
“Respected Prime Minister and Sports Minister, I greet you. After last year’s Wrestling Federation elections, we all saw Brij Bhushan Singh’s influence and intimidation, which deeply troubled me and led me to step away from wrestling. Although the government initially suspended the federation, it has resumed its activities,” Malik said.
She further explained, “The court questioned how the federation could continue functioning after the government had banned it. The High Court stayed its activities, yet the WFI ignored the orders. When reprimanded, the federation placed young athletes at the forefront. I understand their difficult position, as their careers depend on the federation. Prime Minister, if you believe these young athletes’ futures are safe under a federation led by Brij Bhushan, lift the suspension. Otherwise, a permanent solution is needed.”
Malik’s plea highlights the ongoing issues within the WFI and the need for government action to ensure a fair and secure environment for athletes.
In 2023, Malik, alongside fellow wrestlers Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat, joined protests against Brij Bhushan, who faced accusations of sexually harassing female wrestlers.
