On the eve of Republic Day, the Government of India announced the prestigious Padma Awards. These awards, among India’s highest civilian honors, are presented annually in three categories: Padma Vibhushan (exceptional and distinguished service), Padma Bhushan (distinguished service of high order), and Padma Shri (distinguished service in any field).

This year’s Padma honorees include:

Padma Bhushan

  • Vinod Dham: Known as the “Father of the Pentium Chip,” Dham was recognized for his groundbreaking contributions to microprocessor technology. A graduate of Delhi College of Engineering and the University of Cincinnati, he is the founding managing partner of Indo-US Venture Partners, fostering innovation and entrepreneurial collaboration between India and the U.S.

Padma Shri

  • Sethuraman Panchanathan: Director of the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), Panchanathan has significantly influenced global research policy in artificial intelligence, computing, and robotics. Under his leadership, the NSF has advanced innovation in STEM. Before his NSF tenure, he was a professor and innovation leader at Arizona State University.
  • Ajay V. Bhatt: The computer architect behind the creation of the Universal Serial Bus (USB), Bhatt revolutionized global connectivity. Currently an Intel Senior Fellow, he continues to drive technological advancements in computing and innovation.
  • Nitin Nohria: A renowned scholar of leadership and management, Nohria served as the 10th dean of Harvard Business School. He played a pivotal role in fostering collaboration between academia and technology, launching initiatives like the i-lab and Harvard Business School Online. Nohria now serves as Partner and Executive Chairman at Thrive Capital, focusing on internet and software investments.
  • Stephen Knapp: The only American among six foreign nationals honored this year, Knapp is a spiritual teacher and author dedicated to preserving and promoting Vedic philosophy. Through his books, such as The Secret Teachings of the Vedas and Facing Death: Welcoming the Afterlife, Knapp has guided individuals toward higher consciousness and self-realization, spreading awareness about India’s spiritual traditions worldwide.
