NEW YORK, NY – In the wake of the latest presidential debate, pop icon Taylor Swift has ignited a surge of interest in voter registration. On the same night, Swift took to Instagram to endorse Vice President Kamala Harris, prompted over 405,000 people to visit Vote.gov.
“I’m voting for @kamalaharris because she fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them,” Swift posted, encouraging her followers to register to vote. “Remember that in order to vote, you have to be registered! I’ll link where to register and find early voting dates and info in my story.”
By the next evening, a custom link shared by Swift had directed 405,999 visitors to Vote.gov, according to a General Services Administration spokesperson, marking a staggering rise compared to the daily average of 30,000 visits in the week prior.
Swift, who had already generated buzz with her MTV Video Music Awards appearance, continued her push for civic engagement during her “Video of the Year” acceptance speech: “If you are over 18, please register to vote for something else that’s very important coming up.”
Vote.gov itself doesn’t handle voter registration but provides crucial information, directing users to their respective state election websites. It remains unclear how many of the site’s new visitors successfully registered, though Google Trends recorded a significant spike in searches for voter registration following Swift’s endorsement, which also garnered over 10 million likes on Instagram, USA Today said.
Swift’s endorsement holds weight across the political spectrum, with her reach being coveted by both parties. However, in a pointed response to recent political dynamics, Swift made clear her support for Harris following the debate: “The simplest way to combat misinformation is with the truth.” This was in reference to a Trump post that she supported him.
